What are mediums and content?

A medium can be many things.  This can be anything such as radio, TV, newspapers, blogs, etc.  Content is what is reported and what is chosen.  This can include hard news stories, soft news, entertainment news, etc.  How it is presented is always unique in anyway.  Editors and TV producers chose what content is reported for each medium.  Without the use of mediums and content, we would not be as up to date with everything that is going on in the world.

The types of mediums are TV, radio, newspapers, social media and the internet.  Today, 91 percent of millennials are using radio, while 82 percent are using TV and 33 percent are using tablets to get their news, according to MediaLifeMagazine.com.  For some in the younger generations, they may not be able to afford a TV, so they will take to online radio or apps to watch TV or use social media with a mobile device for their information. McLuhan says, “Television demands participation and involvement in depth of the whole being.” (Wiesinger, 22) We can get most of our information searching the internet and using social media.  We can tailor different mediums to our needs and see what content we would like to view.

If the medium and the message were written today, they would be a lot different because of all the recent trends that have been occurring in society.  According to McLuhan, we consumers go through a “stage of adjustment”.  This process is as follows: we are “alarmed” meaning we always have to updated on what we are buying, such as the newest iPhone.  Second is “exhaustion”.  We are at a loss of information and we are overloaded.  We cannot keep up with all the new advances in technology.  The third is “anxiety.”  We have too much going on in our lives to look at every notification on our phone.  The fourth would be “boredom.”  We always looking to move on to the latest invention and we always want more.  (Wiesinger, 29-30) Decades ago, we never dreamed that there would be “smartphones” in society, and this has changed the way mediums work and the message that is received.  Everyday, consumers are using mediums and receiving the message in many ways by exploring what option works best for them.  Mediums can go through social media, so this would be a way that the message will change.  The message(s) that the person is receiving is probably going to be getting them faster and faster in the years to come.
